Survival basics
Before you land. Time & currency tools · Sign up for city-specific prep.
1Get mobile data before landing
Install an eSIM or enable international roaming before you fly. See partner options below — compare coverage and device compatibility on each site.
2Set up mobile payment
Link your foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Most taxis, metros, and restaurants require mobile payment.
3Save your hotel taxi card
After creating a trip, pin your hotel as home base. Show the full-screen Chinese card to any taxi driver.
4Install a VPN (before departure)
If you rely on Google, Instagram, or WhatsApp, configure a VPN while still outside China.
Mobile data (eSIM)
GoSino is independent and not endorsed by these providers. Links go to their official websites. Prices, coverage, and refund rules are set by each provider.
Payment setup
Alipay — TourPass / international card
Download Alipay, switch app language to English, then link a Visa/Mastercard under Account → Settings → Payment → Add bank card. Some cards need verification via SMS from your bank.
WeChat Pay — Pay with foreign card
In WeChat: Me → Services → Wallet → Cards → Add a card. Works at many shops; some small vendors are Alipay-only.
Keep a backup
Carry one physical card and a little cash (¥200–500) for edge cases — older taxis, small stalls, or if mobile pay fails.
Can I use Apple Pay?
Limited. UnionPay cards work in some cases; foreign Apple Pay is not widely accepted for everyday spending.
Do I still need cash?
Less than before, but yes — keep small notes for backups and rural areas.
What if payment fails?
Show the error to staff, try the other app (Alipay vs WeChat), or use backup card/cash.
